ABOUT AZURAK
A bit about us
At Azurak, we create simple yet stylish clothing using traditional artisan textiles, blending heritage craftsmanship with contemporary aesthetics to ensure each piece is both timeless and meaningful.
Azurak was born from a deep love of travel, a passion for exploring new cultures, and a fascination with ancient traditions. Inspired by the artisans we’ve met along the way, we set out to create clothing with positive energy and impact, pieces that not only honour traditional craftsmanship but also support the people and environments behind them.
In addition to our clothing, we offer a carefully curated collection of artisan blankets, silk scarves, tribal textiles, and handcrafted jewellery, treasures gathered on our journeys through the Thar and Sahara deserts. Each piece tells a story of tradition, craftsmanship, and cultural heritage, connecting the past with the present in a meaningful way.
Our Ethos
We believe in fashion with a conscience, putting people and the planet first, from seed to shirt. Our mission is to create high quality garments with the lightest footprint possible, ensuring ethical production, cultural preservation, and a positive social impact.
Unlike mass produced fast fashion, we make our clothing in small batches, staying true to slow fashion principles. This approach minimises waste, supports artisans, and keeps traditional craftsmanship alive. We are inspired by the naturally sustainable production methods of the past, where textiles were made with care, respect for nature, and an intimate knowledge of materials.
At Azurak, we embrace the alchemy of natural colours, working with artisans who carry centuries of wisdom in plant and mineral based dyes. By supporting traditional crafts and ways of life, we honour the skills, stories, and sustainable practices that have been passed down through generations.
Our Materials
Azurak clothing is made from GOTS certified organic and fairtrade cotton, ensuring complete traceability and sustainability. We also work with indigenous Kala cotton, a hardy, rain fed variety native to Kutch. Naturally resilient and grown without irrigation or chemical inputs, Kala cotton is one of the most sustainable fibres available, valued for its rich texture and durability.
Why Organic & Indigenous Cotton?
-
No synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or GMO seeds – protecting ecosystems and farmers.
-
Preserves heirloom cotton genetics – safeguarding traditional seed varieties from extinction.
-
Significantly lower water consumption – reducing strain on vital resources.
-
Encourages biodiversity – promoting healthy soils and resilient farming systems.
-
Does not support GMO giants like Monsanto – rejecting exploitative agricultural practices.
-
Free from toxic synthetic dyes – avoiding harmful chemicals that pollute waterways and endanger workers.
-
Safer working conditions & fair wages – empowering rural communities.
True Sustainability Starts at the Seed
Unlike conventional cotton, which is heavily reliant on genetically modified seeds controlled by agrochemical corporations, our cotton comes from heirloom, non GMO seeds. This ensures biodiversity, seed sovereignty for farmers, and traditional farming knowledge.
From seed to fabric, every stage of organic cotton production prioritises environmental and social responsibility:
-
Soil health & biodiversity – Enriching soil naturally through crop rotation, composting, and chemical-free farming.
-
Water conservation – Rain-fed varieties like Kala cotton require minimal water compared to conventional cotton.
-
Chemical-free dyeing & processing – We use natural plant and mineral based dyes, avoiding synthetic dyes that harm both nature, artisans and consumers.
-
Ethical labor & fair wages – Our cotton is grown and processed under fair conditions, supporting rural livelihoods.
By choosing organic and indigenous cotton, we reject harmful industrial practices and embrace a regenerative, ethical approach to textile production—one that respects the land, the artisans, and the wearers.
Our Prints & Dyes
We collaborate directly with traditional Ajrakh printing families, renowned for one of India's oldest and most sophisticated textile arts. Dating back thousands of years to the Indus Valley civilisation, Ajrakh printing is a meticulous process that involves:
-
Resist dyeing, block printing, boiling, washing, and sun-drying
-
A deep knowledge of plant and mineral based dyes
-
Masterful multi generational craftsmanship
The rich, natural colours in our textiles are derived from:
-
Indigo – deep blues
-
Madder root – warm reds
-
Ochre – golden yellows
-
Iron acetate – deep blacks
-
Pomegranate rind – soft yellows and earthy greens
-
Turmeric – bright golden hues
-
Rubia cordifolia (Indian madder) – deep burgundy and rich pinks
-
Henna – warm browns and olive greens
-
Myrobalan (Harda fruit) – soft greys and muted yellows
These plant and mineral-based dyes are free from synthetic chemicals, creating fabrics that are not only beautiful but also gentle on the skin and the environment.
Tailoring with Care
Once our organic, naturally dyed fabrics are ready, they are sewn in small batches by a family run tailoring workshop that shares our values of craftsmanship and sustainability. Each garment is made with care, ensuring quality, durability, and ethical production.
At Azurak, every piece tells a story of tradition, sustainability, and conscious craftsmanship.
From seed to shirt
At Azurak, we believe that true sustainability and ethical fashion can only be achieved by considering every step of the process from the seed that grows the cotton to the hands that craft each piece. By using organic and indigenous fibres, natural dyes, and traditional techniques, we ensure that our clothing nurtures the planet, preserves cultural heritage, and supports artisan communities.
Our commitment to ethics and sustainability goes beyond minimising harm, it’s about creating a positive impact at every step, celebrating traditional craftsmanship, and honouring the deep connection between people, nature, and textiles.
